Jessica Brock's two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning capped a three-run inning as Charleston Southern rallied past Furman, 3-2, in the softball season opener for both schools on Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Field.

With Furman leading 2-0 and a runner on first with two outs in the fifth, Melissa Adams singled to left field to put runners on the corners before Megan Lombard reached on an RBI single up the middle. Brock, who went 2 for 3 on the day, followed with a double to center field to plate Adams and Lombard as the Bucs claimed a 3-2 lead.

Furman stranded 12 runners and scored just two runs on 11 hits.

Morgan Dowdy (1-0) scattered 11 hits without allowing an earned run while tossing a complete game for the Buccaneers. She issued just one walk and struck out three.

Baseball

The Citadel will hold its annual 'Meet the Bulldogs' scrimmage Sunday at Riley Park. Gates open at noon, with an autograph session before a 1:15 p.m. scrimmage.

Admission is free, with free hot dogs provided by the Charleston RiverDogs. Posters, magnets and schedule cards also will be available.

Lacrosse

Furman is adding men's and women's lacrosse to its roster of sports. The two programs will be funded by an anonymous alumnus who pledged $5 million to the school last October.

Athletic director Gary Clark said Furman will offer the NCAA allowed 12.6 scholarships for the men's team and 12 scholarships for the women's team.

The school expects to hire coaches in the next few months and to start playing during the 2014-15 academic year.
