Stimson was principal of Ashley Hall lower school

Harriet Eugenia Stevens Stimson, a retired principal of the lower school at Ashley Hall, died Wednesday. She was 94.

Born in Charleston, Stimson was a 1939 graduate of the College of Charleston, where she majored in biology and history.

After the death of her husband, Samuel C. Stimson Jr., in 1958, she attended night school for seven years at the University of South Carolina to earn a master's degree in educational administration.

In addition to her career at Ashley Hall, she was a former employee of the Mental Health Clinic of Charleston and Rock Hill, and did a residency program with MUSC.

Stimson was a former member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, Ladies Benevolent Society of the City of Charleston and Garden Club of Charleston.

She is survived by a daughter, Harriet Stimson Gatter.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Mount Zion AME Church. Arrangements are being handled by Stuhr's Downtown Chapel.
