Man thought to have swallowed cocaine
A 22-year-old man was hospitalized Thursday morning after he sped away from a traffic stop, then may have swallowed cocaine as he ran from officers who caught up to him and subdued him with a stun gun.
Charleston County sheriff's Maj. Jim Brady said Grant Brown of Stratton Drive in North Charleston failed to stop for a deputy about 10 a.m. on Interstate 26. The deputy followed the vehicle to Dorchester Manor Drive, north of Patriot Boulevard and Ashley Phosphate Road, where the sole occupant jumped out.
Brady said police subdued Brown with a stun gun. Brady said Brown was hospitalized overnight for observation.
"He says he ingested cocaine," but doctors had not confirmed that, Brady said.
Brown is charged with resisting arrest, marijuana possession, driving without a license, resisting arrest by flight and reckless driving. Brady said Brown also had outstanding arrest warrants and might face additional charges from the S.C. Highway Patrol.
