Red Cross holds training
Lisa Wills, Red Cross Director of Volunteer & Youth Services, recruited and trained 200 Naval Nuclear Power Training Command students to become Red Cross Reserve Disaster Trained Volunteers.
These 200 students are available locally to volunteer in the event of a large-scale disaster. When they finish school and move to their new assignments, they can volunteer in the United States with the Red Cross or overseas with the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces. Having Disaster Trained Volunteers is a significant benefit to the Red Cross and can help the service member earn the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
The second training was Dec. 6 for 100 students. These training sessions took place with the assistance of the NNPTC Command, seven American Red Cross volunteers and three American Red Cross staff members.
The students will receive a Red Cross badge to be used if they are deployed locally or nationally. The long-range goal is to provide training to NNPTC students periodically to ensure that there is always a large group of American Red Cross Reserve Volunteers available to assist in the Lowcountry.
