Local woman pleads guilty in tax fraud case
A 42-year-old Charleston woman pleaded guilty to tax fraud in federal court Thursday and was sentenced to a year in prison for filing fraudulent tax returns using personal information of state prison inmates.
Maxine Adams received the information from an inmate, and created fake wage and tax forms in other inmates' names between 2006 and 2008, according to prosecutors.
Authorities said Adams filed 42 fraudulent tax returns and received refunds from the IRS. Adams' sentence includes three years of supervised release.
