African-American Heritage Days: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 23 and 24 at Wannamaker County Park. A celebration of African-American heritage from its roots in Africa to its branches in the Caribbean and the Americas. Boxed lunches are available and orders should be placed by Feb. 9. Participants are welcome to bring their own lunch; however, snacks and drinks will be available for purchase on site. Call 795-4386 to register, which is required. Elementary School Day: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 23. Middle School Day: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Feb. 24. Meets at: Wannamaker County Park. Fee: $8/student.
Programs
Feb. 8, 15, 22, 29: College Day at the Climbing Wall at James Island County Park. Noon-5 p.m. College students with a valid college ID will receive a free harness and shoe rental with the regular price of admission. Registration is not necessary. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $10.
Feb. 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25, 29: Early Morning Bird Walks at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 8:30 a.m.-noon. A chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Fee: $5/Free for Gold Pass Holders.
Feb. 2: Birding Trips: Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. 7 a.m.-4 p.m. Join staff naturalists on this quest to find a variety of waterfowl and other birds. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: $21/$17 CCR Discount.
Feb. 4: Canoeing at Caw Caw: Heritage to Habitat Canoe Tour at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 1-3:30 p.m. Enjoy an interpretive canoe trip and travel back to the age of rice as we paddle through rice fields and canals that now serve as one of the richest wildlife habitats in the Lowcountry. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount.
Feb. 4, 18: Introduction to Climbing: Climbing 101 at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Learn about gear, basic knots, technique and how to belay. After completion, participants will be prepared to take a belay test upon their next visit to the Climbing Wall. Pre-registration is required. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $24/$20 CCR Discount.
Feb. 4: World Wetlands Day 2012 at Palmetto Islands County Park. 9 a.m.-noon. In celebration of World Wetlands Day, CCPRC is offering a family-friendly introduction to wetland habitats. Pre-registration is required; however, the program is free. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Free with regular park gate admission.
Feb. 9: James Island Bird Walks at James Island County Park. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Join group for a morning bird walk at James Island County Park. The program is free; however pre-registration is required. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up.
Feb. 10: Folly Beach Bird Walk at Lighthouse Inlet Heritage Preserve. 8:30-10:30 a.m. Birding experts help participants explore the surprisingly diverse north end of Folly Beach. The program is free, however pre-registration is required. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up.
Feb. 10-12: Oyster Roast Trail Ride at Mullet Hall Equestrian Center. Noon-4 p.m. Bring your horse, camping gear and supplies for two nights of camping and trail riding on 20 miles of beautiful, wooded trails. A limited number of camping spots with water and electricity hookups are available for $20 per night or you may camp in the primitive camping area for a fee of $10 per night. Stalls available for horses. Pre-registration required by noon Feb. 10. Call 795-4386 to register or for more information. Fee: $55/$45 MHEC Trail Pass Holders.
Feb. 11: Family Artisan Series: Gourds at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 10 a.m.-noon. Let nature provide you and your family with inspiration for your next masterpiece. All materials will be provided unless otherwise noted. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Pre-registration is required. Age: 8 & up. Fee: $10/$8 CCR Discount.
Feb. 11: Intermediate Climbing Courses: Climbing 201: Sport Climbing at James Island County Park. Noon-4 p.m. These intermediate classes will help you transition from a beginner to a competent and capable climber. Participants must have a current CCPRC Belay Card and should be comfortable climbing 5.8-rated routes. Pre-registration is required. Age: 14 & up. Fee: $36/$30 CCR Discount.
Feb. 12: Youth & Family Climbing: Family Belay Lesson at James Island County Park. 1-4 p.m. Children ages 4-13 will climb while parents learn to belay. Children ages 14 and up can learn to belay as well as climb. Pre-registration is required. Age: 4 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount.
Feb. 16: Explore Your Parklands: Future West Ashley Park Site. 1-4 p.m. Pre-registration is required for all participants. CCPRC has recently purchased some amazing new properties that will one day become your parks. Take advantage of this opportunity to explore this parkland with naturalists and historical specialists before they go public. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up. Fee: $15/$12 CCR Discount.
Feb. 17: Out of School Fun Day at James Island County Park. 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Spend the day riding bikes, climbing, learning about our local environment and Leave No Trace ethics. Pre-registration is required. Age: 6-9. Fee: $30/$25 CCR Discount.
Feb. 18: Family Artisan Series: Goldsworthy Nature Arrangement at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 10 a.m.-noon. All materials will be provided unless otherwise noted. Feb. 18: Portable Planetarium: Follow the Drinking Gourd at Wannamaker County Park. 9:30-10:30 a.m. Explore the heavens from inside CCPRC's planetarium. Step back in time to view the night sky that escaping slaves followed to freedom and discover an important element of African American heritage. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 9 & up. Fee: $9/$7 CCR Discount.
Feb. 19: Advanced Climbing Clinics: Climbing 302: Advanced Rescues at James Island County Park. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. These clinics are for the serious climber who wants to make the most of their total climbing experience. Participants should have a current CCPRC Belay Card and have taken Climbing 205: Single Pitch Rescues or have Climbing Wall Manager permission. This class is taught by an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor. Pre-registration is required. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $60/$50 CCR Discount.
Feb. 21: Coastal Navigation Clinics: Coastal Navigation, Level 1 at CCPRC Headquarters. 6-8 p.m. This is the first of a two-part series introducing all aspects of coastal navigation. Pre-registration is required. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount.
Feb. 23: Coastal Navigation Clinics: Coastal Navigation, Level 2 at CCPRC Headquarters. 6 -8 p.m. The second of a two-part series this course will introduce more advanced navigational skills such as dead reckoning, range lines, fixes, taking and following bearings, triangulation and compensating for current. Pre-registration is required. Age: 16 & up. Fee: $18/$15 CCR Discount.
Feb. 24: Beachwalker Bird Walks at Kiawah Beachwalker Park. 8:30 a.m.-11 a.m. The southwestern end of Kiawah Island is an excellent place to spot seabirds and shorebirds. The program is free; however pre-registration is required. A registered chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Age: 12 & up.
Feb. 25: Family Artisan Series: Pine Needle Baskets at Caw Caw Interpretive Center. 10 a.m.-noon. Turn the needles from our native Longleaf Pine into a useful work of art. A registered and paid chaperon is required for participants ages 15 and under. Pre-registration is required. Age: 8 & up. Fee: $10/$8 CCR Discount.
