Charleston shines again in U.S. News and World Report’s list of the top 10 hotels in the U.S.

The magazine’s Travel editors puts the Wentworth Mansion as the No. 3 hotel in America and the only one from Charleston on the national list.

It also ranked hotels by state. There the Holy City’s market area filled eight of the top 10 hotels in South Carolina.

The news magazine called the Wentworth Mansion one of Charleston’s grand old properties.

“Designed at the height of the Gilded Age, the mansion is filled with details like hand-carved marble fireplaces and Tiffany stained-glass windows,” the periodical proclaims of the Wentworth Street inn. “Common areas like the Rodgers Library and the Harleston Parlor recall a slower time in which genteel folk could peruse the evening paper or sip wine at their leisure.

“But that’s not to say the amenities are stuck in the late 19th century,” according to the magazine. “For instance, the Circa 1886 restaurant menu takes its cues from classic Southern dishes, but Chef Marc Collins is sure to use local ingredients and to prepare them in a way that is less detrimental to the waistline. And the spa, though decorated with historic artifacts, offers modern treatments like hot-stone massage and detoxifying body wraps.”

Coming in at No. 1 was the Inn at Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, S.C.

Among the eight from the Charleston region making up the Top 10 list in the state are: No. 2, Wentworth Mansion; No. 3, Sanctuary at Kiawah Island Golf Resort; No. 4., Planters Inn; No. 6, French Quarter Inn; No. 7, Charleston Place Hotel; No. 8, Market Pavilion Hotel; No. 9, HarbourView Inn; and No. 10, Woodlands Inn in Summerville.

No. 5 in the state is the Inn at Harbour Town on Hilton Head Island.
