USC safety Williams suspended

COLUMBIA -- True freshman safety Brison Williams has been indefinitely suspended from South Carolina's football team for "conduct detrimental to the team," the school announced Saturday. The announcement did not offer specifics.

An official at the Columbia Police Department said he had no record of Williams being arrested.

Williams played in eight games last season and had 11 tackles. He started one game, against Florida, because junior strong safety DeVonte Holloman was out with a concussion.

Williams, who is from Warner Robins, Ga., initially signed with USC for the recruiting class of 2010, in which he was rated the nation's No. 36 cornerback by Rivals.com. He attended Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy in the fall of 2010 to improve his grades.

He joined USC for spring practices in 2011. He broke his arm during preseason practices and missed the first four games, then debuted in the fifth game, against Auburn.

Williams is the second USC player to be indefinitely suspended in the past nine days.

On Jan. 13, reserve defensive tackle Byron Jerideau, a rising senior from Colleton County High, was automatically suspended after being arrested by Columbia police for traffic/pedestrian on controlled access highway and disorderly/public disorderly conduct.

According to a police report, Jerideau was arrested after he left a Columbia bar and used profanity at oncoming traffic as he crossed the street without using a crosswalk. Jerideau was nearly struck by a vehicle, and his presence in the street almost caused an accident.

When a police officer approached him, he uttered a profanity at the officer, who reported smelling alcohol on Jerideau. He continued to use profanity as two other officers arrived and helped take him into custody.
