A pair of defensive standouts who helped South Carolina to a school-record 11 victories this season will represent the Gamecocks in the Senior Bowl.

Defensive end Melvin Ingram and safety Antonio Allen both accepted invitations to the senior showcase set for 4 p.m. on Jan. 28 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala.

Penn State

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien was hired as Penn State's first new head football coach in nearly a half-century.

Two people in the NFL with knowledge of the search told The Associated Press that O'Brien has told them he plans to replace fired coach Joe Paterno.

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the search.

Oregon

Running back LaMichael James says he is skipping his senior year and declaring himself eligible for the NFL draft.

James, a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2010, says he has not hired an agent.

A 5-9, 195-pound All-American, James rushed for a school-record 1,805 yards this season despite missing two games with a dislocated right elbow. He led the nation with an average of 150.4 yards rushing a game.

West Virginia

The Mountaineers have asked Florida State about getting out of its Sept. 8 football game in Tallahassee, Fla.

West Virginia officials initiated talks a few months ago because of its pending move to the Big 12.

Florida State wants to play the game and honor its commitment for a return date in 2013 at Morgantown.

Arizona State

Quarterback Brock Osweiler declared for the NFL draft and will forgo his senior season.

Osweiler became the first Arizona State quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards as a junior, finishing the season with 4,036 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Virginia Tech

Running back David Wilson said he'll skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft.

The speedy Wilson rushed for 1,709 yards and nine TDs this season.

Auburn

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Auburn released All-Southeastern Conference tailback Mike Dyer from his scholarship.

Dyer is the first Auburn tailback to rush for 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons, but coach Gene Chizik suspended him indefinitely before the Chick-fil-A Bowl for violating unspecified team rules.

FCS championship

Championship games were once routine at North Dakota State. The Bison are in a higher division now, but figure it might just about be time for another decade of dominance.

First things first: North Dakota State's debut in the Football Championship Subdivision title game today against Sam Houston State, also a first-time finalist but lacking a trophy case like the one the Bison filled in the 1980s.
