Gibbes grant to help bring Hutty art to Lowcountry

For some in the art world, it's been a great year. For others, the end of an era. It was sad to see Eye Level Art and Scoop studios close last Friday, but let's rejoice in the fact that they existed and they did an amazing job while here.

And while we're rejoicing:

Gibbes Museum

There's great news for the Gibbes Museum of Art.

The S.C. Arts Commission recently awarded the Gibbes a $10,351 grant to use for the 2012 fiscal year. This grant will help with various museum programming, including the big "Art of Alfred Hutty: Woodstock to Charleston" exhibit coming in January. As one of the most important artists of the Charleston Renaissance, circa 1915-40, there will be more than 50 of Hutty's works on display.

"Funding by the South Carolina Arts Commission will allow the Gibbes to further its mission of interpreting and presenting the arts and culture of Charleston and the Lowcountry to both traditional and new museum visitors," said Angela Mack, Gibbes executive director.

Several organizations, such as BlueCross BlueShield of S.C. and the member auxiliary group Gibbes, "are helping the Gibbes Museum of Art meet its obligation of matching the arts commission grant with local dollars," Communication Director Marla Loftus said.

For smaller art projects and individual artists, the commission can help with those grants, as well, so get in touch with them and find out what other initiatives they have that may apply to you.

Christmas Hootenanny

Last Friday, it was Jinglebang! at the Tin Roof with The Local Honeys, Lindsay Holler, Run Dan Run and many other bands and singer-songwriters belting out some Christmas cheer.

Tonight, check out Jimbo's Rock Lounge 6:30-9:30 for the Collective Recording Christmas Hootenanny.

Bands from this local recording studio will be rocking out more Christmas madness. Expect to see the Shaniqua Brown, the Royal Tinfoil, Bully Pulpit, Grind Kids and Mountains of Earth, as well as local food trucks.

The entry fee is $2 or a canned food item.

As songstress Rachel Kate Gillon said, "Help feed the hungry, peeps!"

In addition to raising funds and food, Collective Recording will be giving out 100 limited-edition compilation CDs, as well as other items.

"If you haven't yet checked out the studio, we would love for you to set up a time to come meet with us and snoop around. It is quite fabulous indeed," Gillon said.
