Charlton Singleton releases solo jazz album
It was bound to happen sooner or later. Charlton Singleton, an Awendaw native and jazz trumpeter known for his band-leading skills, elegant tone and creative improvisations, has released his first solo jazz EP called "The New Deal."
Fireworks in the form of live music will accompany the release tonight in the sanctuary of Circular Congregational Church, 150 Meeting St. Doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 each at the door.
The show will be preceded by Circular's weekly 6 p.m. Jazz Vespers, a free service. It will feature the Charlton Singleton band: Singleton on trumpet, Mark Sterbank on tenor saxophone, Tommy Gill on piano, Reggie Sullivan on bass and David Patterson on drums.
Singleton, one of the busiest musicians in the city, leads the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, plays in small ensembles around town, serves as organist and choir director at St. Patrick's Catholic Church and teaches.
"The New Deal" features six tunes, four authored by Singleton.
Produced by the trumpeter for Beehive Music, it was recorded in June with engineer Joey Cox at Charleston Sound.
