Charleston-area lawmakers discuss port expansion
MOUNT PLEASANT — Charleston-area lawmakers are set to meet for a discussion of a state permit allowing the dredging of the Savannah River.
The Ports Authority Ad Hoc Committee of the Charleston County Legislative Delegation meets in Mount Pleasant on Thursday.
Some state lawmakers are upset about the Department of Health and Environmental Control’s recent approval of South Carolina permits allowing the dredging of the Savannah River to deepen the shipping channel to the Georgia ports.
They say that gives Georgia a competitive advantage over Charleston’s port. And they say it could scuttle plans to develop a shared port in rural Jasper County, 14 miles closer to the Atlantic Ocean.
