North Charleston will hold its ground-breaking Thursday for its large-scale baseball and sports complex called Wescott Park in the upper Dorchester Road corridor.

The 48-acre park will include a Ripken Training Facility, and each of the three turf ball fields are designed as smaller scale versions of the Boston Red Sox's Fenway Park, Atlanta Braves' Turner Field, and San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park. The ground breaking is set for 10 a.m. behind Fire Station 11 at 9002 Dorchester Rd.

Each field will be equipped for baseball and softball for athletes 12 years old and under. A Ripken Training Circle, patented by Cal and Bill Ripken, is designed for practicing different baseball skill sets, including fielding, batting cages and pitching mounds.

The park is set to open in spring 2013. It has been in the works since 2005.
