ALREADY RAN SEPT. 1
The Berkeley County School District recently invited people across the county to "get on the bus" to support education, and thousands heeded the call.
The district's inaugural "Stuff the Bus Berkeley" campaign collected needed school supplies for students and teachers.
The inaugural campaign netted more than 13,000 items, for a total value of more than $18,000.
"Our goal was to engage our community in supporting education in Berkeley County. I am pleased to report that the community response has been overwhelming," said District Superintendent Rodney Thompson.
"Over 30 local businesses and organizations participated as drop-off locations, and individuals at these sites donated thousands of items. One amazing example is JW Aluminum, whose employees collected over 2,000 items for our students and teachers."
In addition, thousands of items were donated at the district's schools and at two rallies held at the Goose Creek and Moncks Corner Walmarts.
Every school in the district received at least one large box of donated supplies filled with markers, crayons, paper, pencils, book bags and more.
"It's heartwarming to know that people believe in what we're doing," he noted. "This community poured out its heart for our students, and we are grateful for their support."
