Hampton to play vs. Vandy
Redshirt freshman defensive back Victor Hampton will return to South Carolina's lineup Saturday against Vanderbilt after serving a three-game suspension for breaking unspecified team rules. Hampton will back up cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
"Victor will play," said defensive backs coach Lorenzo Ward. "Victor has shown he can challenge people, which is what we're trying to get all the DBs to do. I expect him to play a lot. As long as he practices well this week, he'll play."
Marty Markett will start for the second straight game at the other cornerback stop. He started in place of C.C. Whitlock against Navy this past Saturday night.
DeVonte Holloman will remain at strong safety and D.J. Swearinger will play free safety again this week, Ward confirmed. "DeVonte played well, he tackled well for us. He was one of the young men that coach (Steve) Spurrier singled out in the team meeting."
Ward said he expects free safety Brison Williams, who broke his arm during preseason workouts, to be back in a couple of weeks.
Wooten off to fast start
Special teams coach John Butler has been pleased with kicker Jay Wooten's quick start this season.
Wooten has connected on both of his field goal attempts this season, hitting from 48 and 49 yards.
"I can't say surprised, but I can't say expected either," Butler said. "He's just hadn't done it in a game. Mechanically, he's pretty solid. I just hope he builds on that. Obviously, 2 for 2 on 45 plus-yard field goals is outstanding."
Butler has been impressed with Vanderbilt punter Richard Kent. "It doesn't necessarily change the plans, but he's got a big leg, a really big leg," Butler said. "He's impressive and I read about him today. He's a walk-on. He's had four or five 60-yard punts."
Cornerback Cadarious Sanders is out indefinitely with a knee injury. The redshirt freshman from LaGrange, Ga., hurt his knee against Georgia and did not play against Navy this past Saturday.
"He's out for a little while, but he's getting better," Ward said. "He's still a ways away."
Running back Marcus Lattimore was selected as the SEC's co-offensive player of the week. He also was national and SEC player of the week by Rivals.com.
Auburn kickoff TBA
CBS elected to use its six-day selection for USC's game with Auburn on Oct. 1. CBS will air two games, one at 3:30 p.m. and the other at 8 p.m. on Oct. 1.
