Coaching staff remains confident in CB Gilmore
South Carolina defensive backs coach Lorenzo Ward still believes in cornerback Stephon Gilmore.
Gilmore was beaten for a touchdown and on two more long passes against East Carolina in the Gamecocks' 56-37 victory over the Pirates.
Ward said Gilmore's fundamentals need to improve before this weekend's game with Georgia.
"It came down to technique," Ward said. "He knows he made a mistake. He knows what he has to do. He needs to make those plays for us. Stephon's got to be a positive for this team if we're going to be good. D.J. (Swearinger) is the same way. If we're going to be good in the secondary, those two got the most experience, they've got to play well."
Holloman back in the lineup
Junior DeVonte Holloman will be back in the lineup this weekend against Georgia.
Holloman was suspended for the opener against East Carolina after getting arrested back in June for a DUI. Hollman is listed as the back-up at spur behind Antonio Allen, but could see some action at linebacker during certain situations, Ward said.
Allen is coming off his best game as a Gamecock. Allen had 16 tackles, two forced fumbles and he returned a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown against the Pirates.
"He'll play Spur and the "dime" linebacker spot in the dime package," Ward said. "If you play as many plays as we did this past Saturday we're going to need more than Antonio. DeVonte will have a chance to play."
Holloman said no one has approached him about moving to safety.
"I've taken all my reps at spur, but I'll play where the put me," Holloman said. "I'm just excited to get back on the field."
Auguste to practice today
Cornerback Akeem Auguste did not practice Monday night, but is expected to practice this afternoon. Auguste missed most of the preseason with an injured foot and was out of the lineup Saturday night against East Carolina.
True freshmen debut
Freshman defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who finished with seven tackles, a quarterback hurry and a 1/2-tackle for loss, wasn't the only true freshmen to play against East Carolina.
Running back Shon Carson had two carries for seven yards. Defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles had two tackles.Former Goose Creek star Brandon Shell got into the game late in the fourth quarter at right tackle. Other freshmen to play included, cornerback Kadetric Marcus, running back Brandon Wilds, tight end Rory Anderson, offensive linemen Kyle Harris and Mike Matulis.
