Shane Brown's RBI lifts RiverDogs
Charleston's Shane Brown drove home the game's only run and middle reliever Thomas Kahnle struck out all six batters he faced as the RiverDogs edged the Asheville Tourists, 1-0, in South Atlantic League baseball Friday night in front of 6,232 at Riley Park.
Charleston (27-40, 53-84 overall) allowed just three hits while combining for 15 strikeouts. Asheville fell to 37-30, 68-68 with three games remaining for both teams.
The RiverDogs snapped a scoreless tie in the bottom of the eighth when Daniel Lopez reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an error by third baseman Joey Wong. Kevin Mahoney followed with an intentional walk, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Lopez scored the game's lone run when Brown dribbled a grounder down the third base line and Wong was unable to get a handle on the ball.
Kahnle (3-5) got the victory in relief of Vidal Nuno, who went six strong innings.
Charleston closer Mark Montgomery got his 14th save by striking out Cristhian Adames and ex-Clemson standout Kyle Parker to end the game.
