ISLE OF PALMS — Search crews have been combing the waters off this barrier island for signs of a kite boarder who was reportedly seen in the hurricane-whipped ocean this morning.

The kite boarder was said to have been about a mile off shore before people lost sight of him, Fire Chief Ann Graham said.

Crews searched the area on jet skis, on boats and from the air. No sign of the kite boarder has been found, though there is no clear indication the person was in distress, authorities said.

Waves are expected to top 7 feet today as Hurricane Irene churns along the coast on its way to an expected landfall in North Carolina.
