Architects to recognize firefighter memorial
Charleston members of the American Society of Landscape Architects will recognize the Firefighter Memorial at Mepkin Abbey with a merit award.
J.R. Kramer of Remark Studio in North Charleston designed the memorial to the nine Charleston firefighters, who died in the Sofa Super Store fire in 2007. The memorial, located among the broomsedge in a meadow, is Kramer's interpretation of a council ring -- nine blocks, one representing each firefighter. Visitors can sit and place flowers at the memorial.
The ASLA's local presentation will take place from noon to 1 p.m. today at Waterfront Park on Concord Street. The Charleston program is part of a simultaneous effort by landscape architects nationwide to inform the public about their role in designing the environment.
Mayor Joe Riley will make a presentation at 12:45 p.m.
