Even though the temperature outside suggests otherwise, it's already time for Lowcountry kids to head back to school.

Several free and local back-to-school events can help you and your child get ready for the new school year.

This Saturday, Hollywood and Walterboro are hosting events to celebrate the new year.

The town of Hollywood's Back to School Festival will take place 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at R.D. Schroder Middle School, 7224 S.C. Highway 162. The festival will include games and food, and participants will receive free school supplies.

Call 889-3222 or visit www.townofhollywood.org.

In Walterboro, Eat Smart, Move More Colleton County is hosting a healthy back-to-school event 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Walmart, 2110 Bells Highway.

The purpose of the event is to teach families how to live a healthy lifestyle. The day's activities will include chef demonstrations, tours of Walmart's grocery store, prize drawings, giveaways and more.

To register for a tour, visit www.letsgosc.org or call 549-2595, ext. 128.

Charleston's First Day Festival will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday in Liberty Square, 360 Concord St.

The ninth annual party will feature free school supplies, boat rides and live entertainment.

There will be healthy food samples, and local chefs from Alluette's Cafe and Fleet Landing, as well as students from Burke High School, will give cooking demonstrations throughout the day.

Participants are encouraged to bring nonperishable food donations for the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Family Feud

If you're looking for some grown-up fun, head to the Recovery Room Tavern, 685 King St., on Saturday night for Family Feud Trivia.

Beginning around 7 p.m., two-member teams will go head to head in "Family Feud"-style trivia challenges until first- and second-place winners are determined. First prize is $40 house cash, with $20 house cash going to the second-place winner.

Owner Chris DiMattia ("Boston" to the bar's regulars) says last year's trivia night was such a hit that for several months he's been asked to hold another one and is expecting a good turnout. I'm pretty sure I'll be there.

There's no cost to enter, and since it's Saturday, the bar's "Wheel of Shots" will be spinning throughout the night, randomly choosing $3 shots.

Visit www.recoveryroom.com or call 727-0999.

Rhythm and rhymes

Want to kick off your week with a little culture? Check out Monday Night Poetry and Music each week at 8 p.m.

Hosted by Jim Lundy, the event is held at the East Bay Meeting House, a cafe at 160 East Bay St. Each Monday night begins with a performance by a featured poet or musician. Performers are followed by an open mike-type of setting in which poets and musicians are allowed to present two poems or songs.

Performers must sign up before 8 p.m. Since the space is intimate, it is recommended to show up a little early to get a seat.

Email Lundy at flatbluesky@hotmail.com for information.
