Electrical fire destroys downtown apartment
An electrical fire destroyed one downtown apartment and damaged another Sunday night.
Charleston firefighters responded to a fire call at 84 Nassau St., a two-story wood-frame building, at 6:41 p.m. The fire started in an outlet in the laundry room, Charleston Fire Department spokesman Mark Ruppel said. St. Andrews firefighters assisted in putting out the fire.
A family of five lived in the apartment that was destroyed. The Carolina Lowcountry chapter of the American Red Cross provided the family with funds to replace food, clothing and shoes. They were also given temporary housing.
One person living in the second department was given money to replace food, according to the organization.
