The identity of a pedestrian who was killed Tuesday when he was struck by a car on U.S. Highway 17 near Rantowles was released Wednesday.

Charleston County Chief Deputy Coroner Bobbi Jo O'Neal identified the victim as Marino San Martin, 48, of Miami Beach, Fla. She said he died from the injuries suffered when he was hit by a car.

About 9:20 a.m. in front of 4627 Savannah Highway, a car traveling north on U.S. 17 veered off of the road, striking the pedestrian, who was walking on the shoulder, said Maj. Jim Brady of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

The driver, Brandon Shuman of Ludowici, Ga., was charged with "violation of due care," a traffic violation, Brady said. Shuman is to appear in magistrate's court on Sept. 13.

"It was discovered during the investigation of the accident that the driver was dealing with a medical issue," Brady said.

Brady would not disclose the nature of the medical issue.
