COLUMBIA – South Carolina quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus was arrested overnight in downtown Greenville on a nuisance charge after urinating on Main Street and being uncooperative with officers, according to a police report.

Mangus was released from the Greenville County Detention Center around noon, a police spokesman said. Shortly thereafter, the 42-year-old, in his third year on Steve Spurrier’s staff, was indefinitely suspended by head coach Steve Spurrier.

“G.A. has been suspended from all coaching activities until this matter is resolved,” Spurrier said in a brief university release. “We are all disappointed in his actions and will handle it accordingly.”

Since arriving from Middle Tennessee State, Mangus’ primary responsibility as quarterbacks coach has been to work with, develop and mentor Stephen Garcia, the senior who has been suspended five times for various offenses and arrests. Garcia has yet to be fully reinstated after his fifth suspension, which stemmed from an alcohol-related outburst at a seminar in the spring.

If convicted, Mangus could face a $470 fine or up to 30 days in jail.

The police report says around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, officers driving north on Main Street in an unmarked patrol car noticed a man, later identified as Mangus, urinating on the curb and road in front of Carolina Ale House.

After stopping the car, the arresting officer found Mangus to be “unsteady on his feet.” He also had “a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person.” The report also noted that Mangus’ eyes appeared to be “dilated and glazed over.”

The report says Mangus’ speech was slurred and he did not provide “straight answers” to questions about who he had been with or where he had been.

Mangus and the USC coaching staff are in Greenville for the annual South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association All-Sports Clinic, which runs through Wednesday. Some USC coaches are scheduled to speak at the event, but Mangus is not one of them.

Preseason camp for the team is set to begin in eight days.
