Record book gets swamped; Crocodiles take command
An impressive six records fell Sunday during the first day of the 41st annual City Swim Meet, the conclusion of the Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association's season.
Now, will Snee Farm, which is seeking its 23rd straight title, fall from the top perch as the area's best swim team? Stay tuned.
By the time the final scores were tallied from Day 1 of the three-day meet at the Jewish Community Center, the Coosaw Creek Crocodiles were on top with 958 points, while Daniel Island (918) was second. Snee Farm (902), Parkshore (842) and Shadowmoss (754) round out the top five.
Coosaw Creek coach Jaeson May knows his team can't let up against Snee Farm or Daniel Island.
"As a coach, I always stress that hard work pays off," May said. "This team works harder than any team I've had.
They give 100 percent day in, day out.
"It's a matter of reaping what you sow. Snee Farm is the team with the tradition, the prestige, and is still the team to beat. They set the standard. It's a challenge, but maybe we get to see our hard work pay off."
The day began with Shadowmoss' Emorie Thrasher setting a record in the 8-and-under girls' 25-meter freestyle with a time of 15.98 to eclipse a record that stood since 1988 (Mindy Stelling, CNB, 16.13).
Then it was teammate Jonathon's Stone's turn. He set a record in the boys' 9-10 50 freee with a time of 31.93 to break a record set in 1988 by former Shadowmoss swimmer Mark Beiter (31.97).
Mary Alice Dupree of Fort Johnson, who won three events Sunday, recorded the third new mark of the day with a time of 33.10 in the girls' 9-10 50 butterfly (Tara Riggs, Snee Farm, 33.41, 1991).
Justin Lawrence of Shadowmoss set the record in the boys' 9-10 butterfly with a time of 34.24 (Jeff Beiter, Shadowmoss, 35.33, 1990).
Peyton Wilson of Parkshore broke the girls 9-10 50 butterfly mark with a time of 31.31 (Teal Stage, Longpoint, 31.93, 1999).
Meredith Welsh of Coosaw Creek set a record in the girls' 11-12 50 breaststroke with a clocking of 36.99 (Abigail Boling, Northbridge, 37.06, 2008).
Daniel Island coach Rose Van Metre was happy with her team's effort. She picks Coosaw Creek to win the title, and says her team will battle Snee Farm for second place.
"It's a great feeling what we accomplished today," Van Metre said.
"We dropped a lot of times because the kids came to race. For us to win, we have to win the relays. We have a few relay teams seeded first that we can't lose."
