USC's Roth collects top national player honor

South Carolina pitcher Michael Roth was named national player of the year by CollegeBaseballInsider.com.

Roth, a junior, went 14-3 in 2011, posting a 1.06 ERA in 145 innings to lead USC to a College World Series title repeat.

Gamecocks reliever Matt Price joined Roth on the first team. Also making the first team were College of Charleston third baseman Matt Leeds and Coastal Carolina second baseman Tommy La Stella.

Recruiting

Offensive lineman Cody Waldrop of Seffner, Fla., announced a commitment to South Carolina on Thursday. Waldrop picked USC over Georgia. Waldrop (6-4, 295) visited USC earlier this week. He is the 15th new commitment for the Gamecocks' 2012 class, the 18th overall, and the fifth for the offensive line. He will be an offensive guard.

Stingrays

The NHL's Washington Capitals renewed their affiliation agreement with the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays for the 2011-12 season, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced.

Six Capitals prospects spent some time with South Carolina in 2010-11.
