Police say they uncovered a North Charleston brothel through a website advertising escorts and other adult services.
Officers arrested four people Monday: two women accused of prostitution and a couple accused of running a brothel.
The North Charleston Police Department SPEED team conducted the sting by contacting the website www.backpage.com. Women on the site offered the officers sex in exchange for money, police spokesman Spencer Pryor said.
Undercover officers met with two women at 7910 Crossroads Drive, Apt. 3D. As officers arrested them on a charge of solicitation of prostitution, the women told police that the man renting the apartment coordinated their services and that he, and his girlfriend, would be by soon to collect the money.
Officers arrested Kevin Earl Baker, 43, when he arrived, Pryor said. Police charged both Baker and Christy Nicole Gruber, 26, with maintaining a brothel and simple possession of marijuana.
Pryor said police searched Baker's and Gruber's home at 8044 Kittery Ave. and recovered 3.5 grams of marijuana, one desktop computer and one laptop computer, and their cellphones.
Police charged Lillian Ruth Thompson, 22, and Brandon Elizabeth Bradford, 26, both of Sedgefield Drive in Hanahan, with solicitation of prostitution, Pryor said.
