Music highlights: Josh Roberts and The Hinges, Old You
Josh Roberts and The Hinges, 6/24 at The Village Tavern
Josh Roberts and The Hinges began building a name for itself as the charged opener for Band of Horses during several of the group's hometown shows.
But it's the band's explosive blend of Americana, blues, rock and soul-inspired psychedelia that landed the Columbia-based group such a coveted gig.
Roberts' tragically underrated songwriting, enthusiastic -- almost spastic -- presentation and masterful guitar skills combine the oddities of Les Claypool and Frank Zappa with the passion of Jimi Hendrix and the raucous, Southern soul of Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers) to create an imaginative and unusual character.
Josh Roberts and The Hinges will perform Friday at The Village Tavern, 1055 Johnnie Dodds Blvd., with Mac Leaphart, Caleb Caudle and the Bayonetts. Call 492-5875 or visit www.charlestonvillagetavern.com
Old You, 6/23 at The Pour House
Relatively new to the local scene, Old You began to surface in bar and restaurant corner stages as well as opening shows for various acts around town.
Welding a clever mix of jazz, blues and acid rock to the boisterous soul-bearing of vocalist Young-Mi Feldsott, Old You constructs a sturdy yet sleek vehicle of sultry and emotive blues/rock.
When put in motion, it sounds like a time warp from the '60s to the distant future and back within one song.
The youthful quartet will embark on a small regional tour, the first for this up-and-coming act.
Old You will kick off the tour tonight with a performance at The Pour House, 1977 Maybank Highway. Local acts Firework Show and Gangrene Machine also will perform. Tickets are $5 at the door. Doors open at 8 p.m. Call 571-4343 or visit www.charlestonpourhouse.com.
