Election dates announced to fill Umphlett's District 100 seat
COLUMBIA — Filing to fill the Moncks Corner-based state seat left vacant by the death of Rep. C. David Umphlett Jr. begins at noon on June 17.
The primary election for the District 100 seat is set for Aug. 9. The sprawling Berkeley County district, as it is drawn now, includes Cordesville, Pimlico, Macedonia, Moncks Corner and Whitesville. The boundaries of the district are subject to change with the Legislature’s pending plan for new legislative and congressional lines based on the 2010 U.S. Census.
Chris Whitmire, public information officer for the South Carolina State Election Commission, said Monday that the commission received an official writ of election from Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, locking in the dates for the election.
The filing period with the Berkeley County parties closes at noon on June 27. The filing fee is $113.
If a runoff is needed, it will be held Aug. 23. The special election is set for Sept. 27.
Umphlett, 69, died May 29. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The Republican served in the House since 2003.
