60 teachers benefit from Boeing grant
A handful of science, technology, engineering and math teachers in the Tri-County area will benefit from a $129,000 grant from Boeing to the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce’s Education Foundation.
The goal of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in the Workplace initiative is to better prepare students to meet the region’s workforce needs, and the Education Foundation plans to do that by giving 60 teachers an opportunity to visit a STEM-related business and receive information on project-based learning.
“Ultimately, we want to increase the percentages of our region’s students who graduate with the STEM skills they will need to succeed in further education and in the world of work,” said Allen Wutzdorff, the foundation’s executive director. “This grant addresses a crucial link in that process: the education of our educators.”
This is the first grant the foundation has received from Boeing, which invited local officials to apply for the funds. The initiative is based on the foundation’s Workplace Institute for Education, which offers educators experience in work sites in every employment sector. STEM is a part of that effort.
