UPDATE: Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury identified the man who was killed during the burglary as Bobby Gadsden Jr., 21, of Moncks Corner. Gadsden was killed by a single gunshot wound, Salisbury said.

Earlier story:

MONCKS CORNER — Authorities say a man was shot and killed this morning while breaking into a Moncks Corner home.

Moncks Corner police responded to 1404 Cooper River Blvd. about 8:45 a.m. The homeowner told police that he was in the bathroom shaving when he heard a noise inside the house.

The homeowner said he went out to the garage to check and see if his son had arrived at the home, but did not see his car.

When he returned inside, the homeowner told police he then saw a suspect carrying the homeowner's long gun and a satchel full of ammunition and knives down the stairs.

The man fired a pistol at the invader, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury. The coroner said the dead man was wearing a hoodie, sunglasses and gloves when he was found at the bottom of the stairs near the back door.

The 20-year-old man died from a single gun shot, according to the coroner.

After the shooting, the homeowner heard more noises upstairs and decided to go next door to a neighbor's house and call police. That was when a second suspect ran from the house. He was captured in city limits 45 minutes later without incident, according to Moncks Corner Police Chief Chad Caldwell.

Lt. Wendell Bowen, with the Moncks Corner police, said the shooting appears to be justified and they do not intend to file charges against the homeowner.

They are still investigating why the thieves targeted that house.

Salisbury said the shooting suspect did not have any identifying information on him.

Bowen said they are charging the second suspect, Clifford Ramsey, 20, of Moncks Corner, with burglary in the second degree.

The case remains under investigation.
