Numerous events are planned next week to mark the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, which began April 12, 1861, with shots fired from James Island at Union forces in Fort Sumter.
What: "Voices from the Civil War," featuring Jay Ungar, Molly Mason and The Family Band with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Sean Newhouse, guest conductor; CSO Spiritual Ensemble & Mount Zion AME Spiritual Singers
When: 9-10:30 p.m.
Where: White Point Garden at The Battery
What: "When Jesus Wept" sunrise concert, in remembrance of the moment the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Music for Brass Ensemble & Military Drums; a short candlelight concert featuring hymns by Colonial American composers including William Billings and others.
When: 4:30-5 a.m.
Where: White Point Garden
What: Groups around the Charleston area fire cannons throughout the day to mark the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.
When: The commemoration starts with a 10-inch mortar cannon fired at 6:45 a.m. from Fort Johnson.
Where: The following other locations will immediately start firing after the first round for about 45 minutes. Sporadic firing will occur from these locations, and there will be another 45-minute barrage at 7:45 p.m.:
--Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant
--Pitt Street Bridge, Mount Pleasant
--Alhambra Hall in Mount Pleasant
--Breach Inlet on Sullivan's Island
--Station 22 on Sullivan's Island
--Fort Johnson on James Island
--Carolina Yacht Club (between 7 and about 9 p.m.)
East Battery and Murray Boulevard from South Battery to King Street will be closed from 8:30 a.m. Monday until midday Tuesday. Residents or guests with valid identification will be allowed to travel to their residences.
Traffic directions for concerts at White Point Garden
Eastbound traffic on Murray Boulevard will be redirected north onto King Street then west on South Battery.
Southbound traffic on King Street will be redirected west onto South Battery.
Southbound traffic on Meeting Street will be redirected east or west onto South Battery, then continue west on South Battery or will be redirected north on East Battery.
Southbound traffic on Church Street will be redirected east onto South Battery, then redirected north on East Battery.
Eastbound traffic on Atlantic Street will be redirected north onto East Battery.
Southbound traffic on East Battery will be redirected west on Water Street, then either north or south on Church Street and/or Meeting Street.
Parking restrictions for concerts at White Point Garden
The following streets will have no parking from noon Sunday until midday Tuesday:
South Battery between King and East Battery streets on south side.
East Battery between South Battery and Murray Boulevard on both the east and west side.
Murray Boulevard between King and East Battery streets on both the north and south sides.
King Street between South Battery and Murray Boulevard on both the east and west side.
