Officials: 1 dead in small plane crash near Elgin
ELGIN — Officials are investigating a plane crash near Elgin that killed one person.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said Friday she did not have information on the type of aircraft or its registration because the plane was on fire. Bergen said local officials told the FAA that one person died in the crash.
Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews told WIS-TV in Columbia that the crash was near Interstate 20.
WIS reported that witnesses saw a small red plane hit the ground near a road, followed by an explosion and flames.
The sheriff’s and coroner’s offices did not immediately return phone and email messages Friday.
