More than 40 million people a year endure sleep disorders, insomnia, blocked airways, grinding teeth, muscular pain affecting sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, chronic fatigue and limb movements.

People living in West Ashley and surrounding areas no longer have to travel to receive diagnosis and treatment for chronic sleep-related problems. A new sleep lab is open on the second floor of Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.

Sleep studies, conducted by registered polysomnographers and registered respiratory therapists with training in sleep studies, monitor the stages of sleep, breathing patterns, eye movement, heart rate, snoring and sudden leg or body movements.

Once the study is complete, a board-certified sleep physician will interpret the test and provide results to the patient and the referring physician. Tests are performed on an outpatient basis, and most insurance plans cover sleep testing. Adults and children over age 5 are eligible for testing.

Appointments can be scheduled by a physician by calling 724-2246. Call Bob Rife, manager of respiratory care for Roper St. Francis Healthcare, at 724-2764.
