Aaron Hansen grabs fourth state championship
ANDERSON -- Summerville's Aaron Hansen became the third wrestler in Class AAAA state history to win four state championships following his 9-2 win over Westside's Sam Parkinson on Saturday at the Anderson Civic Center.
"All the pressure is gone," said Hansen, who added that 11 years of hard work had paid off.
Hansen said there was always that pressure to win, whether it's a regular season match or a match for a state championship.
"I knew no one in my weight class (125 pounds) could touch me," Hansen said.
Hansen said Parkinson motivated him with comments that Parkinson made in an area newspaper, guaranteeing Hansen would not win his fourth championship.
"Saying he guaranteed I wouldn't be a four-timer made me mad, and I had to prove him wrong," he said.
Hansen said this was his easiest of the four titles that he had won, as he said his past championships were one by just one point.
"It feels good to score some points this time and really put him away."
Summerville now has teammate Jordan Wigger (119) following in Hansen's footsteps following his third championship, as a junior, with a 10-0 win over Westside's Joey Antoine.
"I've got to follow my boy Aaron," Wigger said.
Wigger said he would feel the pressure next year, but not for winning his fourth straight championship, but to make sure he lived up to his own expectations.
Summerville coach Darryl Tucker gave all their success to their practice partners and the individuals themselves.
"They are determined and do a lot on their own," Tucker said.
Fort Dorchester had two wrestlers win state titles: Javon Jordan, a 3-2 winner over Dorman's Hector Contreras in the 103-pound weight class, and Daquon Wilson (152), an 8-0 winner over Zack Dicus of White Knoll.
Hanahan also produced two state champions in Class AA-A division. Francis Boykin (135) pinned Chesnee's Dustin Martin, and Denis Flores (145) defeated Chesterfield's Trey Stafford, 8-4.
