Cougars increase region lead

BROOKLET, Ga. -- The College of Charleston Equestrian team increased its lead in the IHSA Zone 5 Region 3 standings to 23 points over second-place Savannah College of Art and Design at the Georgia Southern IHSA Horse Show at Evermore Farm on Sunday.

Class winners for the Cougars include Sophie Gotwald, Emily McKee, Rachel Williams, Tatiana Calvo, and Sharon Percival.

The Cougars finished the day with 42 points followed by SCAD with 32. The Cougars next compete Saturday in Plantation, Fla.

Track

Micah Wessinger set a Citadel women's track record in the 600 meters with her victory in the Captain's Invitational on Saturday night. The sophomore recorded a first-place time of 1 minute, 37.68 seconds.

Senior Natalie Wolin led a Citadel sweep in the 3,000-meters by winning in 11:12.56. Teammates Christine Shonbeck and Suzanne Gay were second and third, respectively.

The Citadel is next at Johnson City, Tenn., for the Niswonger Invitational on Feb. 11-12.

Tennis

The College of Charleston men's team defeated Gardner-Webb, 6-1, in its spring season opener at Patriots Point.

The Cougars (1-0) swept doubles and won five of their six singles matches to roll past the Bulldogs (1-3).

--The College of Charleston women fell to William & Mary, 4-3, in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Gainesville, Fla.

Wrestling

The Citadel wrapped up Southern Conference play for the season with a disappointing 26-6 loss at Chattanooga.

It was the 31st consecutive conference victory for the Mocs (7-9, 1-0) and their seventh straight win over The Citadel (7-10, 3-2).

The Bulldogs return to action next Sunday when they host the 17th annual All-Academy Championships at McAlister Field House.
