Authorities are looking for a man they say fatally shot his former mother-in-law a few days after getting out of jail for assaulting his ex-wife.
Charleston County Sheriff's deputies were told about 6:40 p.m. Saturday that a woman had been shot on Debbenshire Drive in West Ashley. She later was identified as Linda Hayes, 65, of Florida, who was visiting her daughter. She died at 7:30 p.m. from two gunshot wounds to her right side, according to the Charleston County Coroner's Office.
Hayes' husband also was in the house and identified the shooter as the ex-husband, 40-year-old Ronald David Ratliff, according to Sheriff's Maj. John Clark. Ratliff had been released from the Charleston County Detention Center on Tuesday after serving time for assaulting his ex-wife. Ratliff's ex-wife was not home when he went there Saturday evening, Clark said.
Investigators think Ratliff may have headed to Pensacola, Fla., where he has family. They think he was driving a white 2004 Ford Econoline van with S.C. license plate EPP250.
Ratliff is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing 210 pounds, with scars on his neck and tattoos on his back, shoulders and upper right arm.
Authorities say he may be carrying the small-caliber handgun that was used in the shooting.
