Date set for Summerville smoking ban to take effect
SUMMERVILLE — The snuff-out day for smoking in town will be July 12, Councilman Mike Dawson said this week.
That clears up at least one ambiguity of an indoor smoking ban passed by Town Council last week. With the law reading that it will take effect "within six months," smokers and non-smokers alike were bewildered about just when that would be. Dawson, who proposed the law, said any interpretation besides six months from the date it was passed would require another council action.
Still to be decided are a host of issues such as just how far from a building is a "reasonable distance" to allow smoking and how that will affect restaurants with outdoor seating.
