Dorchester County delay clouds Summerville smoking vote
SUMMERVILLE — The apparent resistance of Dorchester County Council to passing a smoking ban could stub away at Town Council’s vote on Wednesday.
Council votes final reading on a law banning smoking indoors in businesses. But the ordinance has been revised since first reading with vague “public places” language that troubles at least one council member. And Councilman Mike Dawson, who managed in December to revive the ordinance tabled since spring 2010, is less than certain it will pass.
Dawson won council members’ support and re-introduced the law after being told the county also would propose one. County Council delayed a vote Tuesday, but a majority of council members indicated they would oppose it when it comes to vote in February.
“I still hope we have the votes,” Dawson said Friday.
