A German aerospace manufacturer will open a Charleston operation next year, bringing jobs and possibly an ambition to make parts for Boeing’s 787 jet.

Dannecker Fine-Tec, which is headquartered near Munich, will spend $3 million to open a factory that will employ about 40 workers, the state Commerce Department said today.

The company has not decided on a location.

Dannecker will begin hiring for the positions in June using a state-funded training program.

The local plant will make metal parts for companies in aerospace, medical, semi-conductor and hydraulic markets, according to the Commerce Department. The company specializes in metals such as titanium.

“Dannecker Fine-Tec’s new operations in South Carolina will nicely complement our state’s strengths in advanced manufacturing sectors such as aerospace and medical,” said Commerce Secretary Joe Taylor.

According to the company’s website, Dannecker supplies parts that end up on 787 Dreamliner planes, Boeing’s 747 and Airbus’s A340 and A380 aircraft.

Boeing is building a $750 million assembly plant for its 787 in North Charleston. It is expected to open next year.
