Fowler to speak on elections at The Citadel

Donald Fowler, former national chairman of the Democratic National Committee, will talk about next week's elections at 6:30 tonight at The Citadel's Copeland Auditorium in Grimsley Hall.

Fowler currently serves as The Citadel's John C. West Distinguished Professor of Government and is teaching a course on the off-year election process. His term as national chairman included the 1996 presidential election between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole.

The lecture, sponsored by The Citadel School of Humanities and Social Sciences and Pi Sigma Alpha, is free and open to the public.

Chamber backs 3 school board candidates

The political arm of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce has endorsed three Charleston County School Board candidates who have positions and philosophies that best match those of the chamber.

The board of the Business Advocating Change Political Action Committee voted to support barbershop owner Michael Miller for the West Ashley seat, and auto body shop manager Craig Ascue and retired IBM executive Everett Wilcox for the two East Cooper seats.

Candidates must live in certain areas but are elected by the entire county.

"They showed a commitment to preparing our students for the workforce, support the Superintendent and the strategies for improving education that have been put into place, and displayed a willingness to work with the members of the existing board to continue to improve education outcomes of students," Neil Whitman, committee chairman, said in a statement. "We are excited about these three candidates."

The group's endorsement process includes asking school board candidates to complete a questionnaire and participate in its interview process.

Since the committee's creation in 2000, two-thirds of the candidates it has endorsed have been elected.

Richardson will greet supporters at Taco Boy, 217 Huger St., at 5:15 p.m.

He faces Republican Alan Wilson and Green Party candidate Leslie Minerd in Tuesday's general election.
