Boeing to mark construction milestone Friday
Boeing Co. will mark a construction tradition Friday when workers put in place the last final piece of structural steel on the aircraft assembly plant the company is building at Charleston International Airport.
The so-called topping-out ceremony is set for 10:30 a.m. off Aviation Avenue.
The event is not open to the general public.
Gov. Mark Sanford’s office said today that the governor changed his schedule so he could attend the ceremony.
Boeing is investing $750 million to expand its North Charleston manufacturing campus, where it will begin assembling its new 787 passenger jet next year.
The first South Carolina-made Dreamliner is expected to be completed in early 2012.
The Post and Courier will be covering tomorrow’s topping-out event. Check back Friday for more details.
