South Carolina outfielder Whit Merrifield agreed to terms with the Kansas City Royals.

Merrifield, a ninth-round selection in last month's baseball draft, has been a staple the past three seasons in the Gamecocks' lineup. He capped his college career with the game-winning RBI single in the 2-1 victory over UCLA in 11 innings that helped lift the Gamecocks to a national championship.

Merrifield finished the year with a .321 batting average (95 for 296) with 13 homers and 42 RBIs. He tallied 263 career hits that puts him at sixth in school history.

--College of Charleston slugger Matt Leeds was to take part Wednesday in the inaugural College Home Run Derby at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Leeds, who hit 21 homers in 2010, was one of eight entrants that also included Fresno State’s Jordan Ribera, who led the nation with 27 homers. WCSC-TV (CBS) is set to showcase the event in a one-hour telecast Sunday at 1 p.m.

South Carolina guard Terrence Campbell was granted a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA, meaning he could play two more seasons for the Gamecocks. Campbell is a 6-3, 283-pound offensive lineman. He arrived at USC in 2006 and received a medical redshirt that season after injuring his left knee in preseason camp. Campbell became a starter in 2008 and continued that role the following season.
