Edisto tribe gets state recognition
The Edisto Indian Tribe of Ridgeville was recently officially recognized by the state of South Carolina.
Marcy Hayden, the Native American coordinator for the South Carolina Commission of Minority Affairs, and Mary Amonitti, commissioner, presented the tribe with a State Recognition Certificate at the 35th annual Edisto Indian Pow Wow event.
Chief Anthony Davidson and Vice Chief Andy Spell thanked everyone involved for working hard to receive state recognition.
The tribe, with more than 800 members, is working next to get federal recognition.
