One person was killed and another was seriously injured Wednesday when a pick-up truck ran off the road, struck a tree and burst into flames on Interstate 95 in Colleton County.

The 2008 Chevrolet pickup was traveling southbound at mile marker 52 about 3:20 p.m. when the driver apparently lost control and went off the side of the road, said Lance Cpl. Bob Beres of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver, a Georgia resident whose name was being withheld until relatives could be notified, was killed, Beres said.

A passenger was flown by Meducare helicopter to Medical University of South Carolina, he said.

The traffic in the southbound lanes was affected for almost two hours, Beres said.

The collision is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
