Visit disconcerts local resident

A Mount Pleasant woman called police Oct. 27 after a woman reportedly knocked on her door holding a sign advertising rentals and said she thought she was at a homeless shelter.

The woman said that the woman knocked on her door Oct. 26 holding a sign that said "units available now" with a phone number, a police report states.

The resident said the woman held the sign as if she were displaying it to the public and then told the resident that she thought that the house was a homeless shelter, a report states. The resident said that her home was not a shelter and the woman left.

The next day about 3:30 p.m., the resident got into her car and told police she found the rental sign in her backseat. Then she went to a gas station, and the cashier reportedly said, "I know where you live." The woman said she is a regular customer there and knew the cashier, but she was unnerved by the recent visit and the cashier's comment.

The cashier told police that she said that she knew where the woman lived because she gave the woman a ride to the neighborhood on Oct. 26 and recognized the resident's car. The cashier gave the woman a ride because she said that she needed to clean someone's house, the report says.

The complainant said she was afraid that the woman would return to her home. Police drove around the area but didn't find anyone.

The manager told police that the man looked suspicious and appeared to be about 20 years old and weighed about 170 pounds, a report states. Officers looked for the man and found no one in the area.
