Lowcountry singer-pianist Dan McCurry goes under cover
Dan McCurry, frontman of mellow indie pop trio Run Dan Run, recently launched Cover Me Mondays, an Internet project in which he posts videos of himself performing cover tunes on YouTube each Monday for a year.
So far, McCurry has posted renditions of Broken Social Scene's "Anthem for a Seventeen-Year-Old Girl" and Death Cab for Cutie's "Title & Registration."
The band also features Nick Jenkins on drums and Ash Hopkins on guitar.
The group can next be seen performing at 9 p.m. Saturday at Awendaw Green, with Weigh Station and Golden Pyramids, as well as at 9 p.m. the following Saturday at The Pour House, featuring Firework Show and Co.
Preview chatted with McCurry at City Lights Coffee and asked a few questions.
Q: What sort of songs are you hoping to cover?
A: I appreciate all music, but I personally resonate with music that I feel holds honesty and expresses something.
I'm sure I'll get crazy requests as a joke, but I'm sure they wouldn't actually want to see me play them. No one wants to see me play "Free Bird."
When I post a cover, I will explain why I picked it. For me, I usually look at lyrics first; the music can change but I stay true to the lyrics. Even with requests, I'll be asking people for personal stories.
Q: What's your filming process?
A: I do it one month at a time. I recorded all four in one evening. Recording's really painful.
Q: You have to get pretty for the camera …
A: And you have to get the cameras and the room set up properly with the lighting. The guy from Pedro The Lion put out a DVD called "Alone at the Microphone." It's just him and he plays about an hour's worth of material, which he mixes in with an interview.
There's a golden snare drum on top of the upright piano, which is in a blue room. It's all visually pleasing. I'm sure that's not what the room looks like all the time. I try to think about that when I record.
Q: Do you ever watch other peoples' covers on YouTube?
A: Most of the time, when you see covers on YouTube, people learn to play the song as it is. Then they take their shirt off and play in front of their computer camera. It sounds terrible and it doesn't look good. I'm definitely not doing anything like that.
Q: So we have a "no topless recordings" guarantee?
A: Yes, a "no topless recording" guarantee.
Q: Run Dan Run's EP, "27 Coming Street," is named for your address. Any stalkers paid you a visit yet?
A: No, luckily not. We recorded five songs on the spot at my place. Ash does all the mixing. He took it home, and he just called it "27 Coming Street."
It felt perfect and logical, so that was that. I actually play a lot of house shows at my place. I have one coming up in October.
