Fresh look at what's important
Exceptional performance by Charleston's own Pure Theatre marked the opening night of "Speech and Debate" by Stephen Karam.
The principal cast of gifted local high school students did not miss a moment with this well-written and relevant script.
Will Northcut as Howie, Sullivan Graci-Hamilton as Diwata and Addison Dent as Solomon, came together as three teenagers struggling to find their voice in an uncommon cause.
They provided us with an entertaining romp through the frailties of high school life.
In doing so, they gave us a fresh look at what is important, what we soon forget.
Along with teacher/advisor/journalist C. Kathleen Donnelly's performance, the ensemble's success is in making us laugh at, while loving, their larger-than-life characters and finding the idealism, narcissism, and need for love and acceptance among us all.
Misfits of all ages and persuasion, as well as anyone who loves great theater, will find it a worthwhile evening at the eight subsequent performances through August 15 at Circular Congregational Church's Lance Hall.
You'll even be treated to a "moonwalk" as part of the delightful choreography.
