HANAHAN — A Goose Creek woman was killed while driving to work Tuesday morning after a tractor-trailer hauling pine chips jackknifed and overturned, crushing her car.

Melody Wilson, 51, was pronounced dead at the intersection of North Rhett and Tanner Ford boulevards in Hanahan shortly after the 8 a.m. wreck, Berkeley County Coroner Glenn Rhoad said.

The southbound lanes of North Rhett were closed for several hours as emergency crews removed the truck from the top of the Ford Escort Sport and cleaned thousands of pounds of wood chips that covered the road and the car.

Hanahan police Lt. Michael Fowler said investigators determined that the truck was 2,000 pounds overweight, but no charges have been filed. He said it appears the tractor-trailer attempted to stop abruptly when a car in front of it stopped at a yellow light.

The truck driver lost control, causing the truck to lock up and jack-knife, he said. Fowler said they're still investigating whether the truck was going too fast or carrying too much weight.

Rhoad said Wilson worked for SPAWAR.
