Stingrays coach Bednar leaving team for AHL job
South Carolina Stingrays head coach Jared Bednar has taken a job as an assistant coach for the Abbotsford Heat of the American Hockey League, a source told The Post and Courier this afternoon.
Cail MacLean, who served as the team's assistant coach this past season, is expected to be named the Stingrays head coach later this week.
Bednar has been with the Stingrays organization since 1995 as a player, assistant coach and head coach.
In two seasons as head coach Bednar compiled an 89-45-9 mark and led the Stingrays to the franchise's third Kelly Cup title this season. Bednar was the first player in ECHL history to have his name on the Kelly Cup three times.
Bednar won Kelly Cup titles in 1997 and 2001 as a player.
The Heat, located near Vancouver, B.C., is the affiliate of the NHL's Calgary Flames.
