Smoak, Havens, Cisco on disabled list
It's been a tough week for Lowcountry products as Justin Smoak, Reese Havens and Mike Cisco all have been placed on the 7-day disabled list.
Smoak (Stratford High School/South Carolina) has been sidelined by a strained left oblique for Class AA Frisco in the Rangers' organization.
Smoak, batting .325 with six homers and 25 RBIs in 41 games for Frisco, last played on May 28, when he went 1-for-3 with a double against Tulsa.
Here's what Baseball America's Jim Callis said in the Dallas Morning News about the chances of the Rangers calling up Smoak to replace struggling first baseman Chris Davis:
"If you'd have asked me this at the beginning of the year as a hypothetical question, I'd have said it wouldn't matter because there was no reason not to let Davis work through his struggles, and no reason to rush Smoak. But with the Rangers contending, they're going to have to look seriously at calling up Smoak if things don't change by the all-star break. Smoak is tough enough to handle the promotion, and while ideally you'd like to give him more minor league ABs, the Rangers can't take a sub-.700 OPS at first base when they're trying to win."
Havens, playing for the Mets' Class A team in Port St. Lucie, Fla., has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to May 31. He's batting .228 with seven homers and 26 RBIs in 44 games, but has not played since May 30, and is hitting just .111 in his last 10 games.
Havens was, however, selected to play in the Florida State League all-star game set for Fort Myers on June 20.
And Cisco (Wando HS/USC), pitching for the Phillies' Class A team in Clearwater, also is on the DL. He picked up his first win on May 28, working six innings of six-hit ball and allowing one earned run, but has not pitched since.
He also was placed on the DL retroactive to May 31.
There was no official word on the injuries to Havens and Cisco.

--Pitcher R.J. Swindle (Charleston Southern) has had two brief stints in the big leagues with the Brewers this season, and continues to baffle hitters at Class AAA Nashville. He's got an ERA of 0.39 in 23 innings, with 24 strikeouts against just seven walks.
